About First Baptist Church

"Growing Together in Christ Since 1818."

Welcome!

The mission of First Baptist Church is best represented by the following priorities: a strong, Biblically based, preaching ministry which communicates Christian theology in terms that are relevant to people's lives; a youth ministry which nurtures faith, commitment and discipleship; active programs of pastoral care, visitation, music, and involvement with members of the congregation; a ministry that leads people to make decisions for Christ and encourages their participation in the local church, community, and the world; a program of short-term Christian counseling; and a church environment which nurtures a sense of acceptance, inclusion, and caring. Our facilities are handicapped accessible.

Our Congregation

At First Baptist Church we enjoy a strong support network with a deep sense of fellowship; we care about each other; we help one another when in need, and we attempt to nurture the sick and visit our shut-ins. As a church family who enjoys being together as a group of believers, we attempt to create an atmosphere that is both accepting and welcoming to newcomers. This church has many traditions and is made up of members from a variety of different backgrounds and perspectives. Because we see our diversity as a strength, we feel it important to nurture our differences and to project a feeling of tolerance and ecumenical spirit. Our diversity is often bridged by our enthusiasm, our energy, our flexibility, our humor, and by a deep and abiding faith in our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Our Pastor

The Rev. Stephanie A. Salinas is a graduate of New Brunswick Theological Seminary in New Brunswick, New Jersey. She and her husband and two sons united with us in August of 2002. Rev. Salinas is an enthusiastic preacher, a dedicated teacher, and a compassionate counselor. She is dedicated to mission locally and globally.

Worship

Worship services include not only solid biblical preaching, but choirs, musicals, holiday cantatas, and Youth Sundays.

At First Baptist, music is an integral part of our worship service, and the Music Director works closely with the Music and Worship Committees. Opportunities for participation in the music program abound: Adult, Youth, Junior, and Cherub Choirs, as well as Hand Bell and Chime Choirs are regular blessings in our service. Our congregation is home to many gifted musicians of many ages, and a recent addition is an all-congregation orchestra.

During Sunday morning worship services, child care is available for infants and toddlers. Also, during the latter part of the worship service, a Junior Church program is available.

Learning and Fellowship

Many opportunities are offered at First Baptist Church. In addition to Sunday School classes being available for all ages each Sunday, there are mid-week Bible study classes, mission work, youth ministries, biblical story telling, men's and women's groups, and fellowship groups for a variety of ages. Other opportunities include a men's softball team that plays against teams from other area churches in the city's Church Softball League. Potluck suppers, game nights, men's and women's activities, and the annual talent show bring together members of First Baptist for fellowship in cross-generational settings.

Mission

Our church is very active in mission work, and many mission trips have been made to the Dominican Republic. One of the newer missions of our church, Operation Christmas Child, was very popular with many age groups during the Christmas season. We are currently exploring the option of developing a sister church agreement with another congregation.

Locally, many members of First Baptist take part in the Dorothy Day Soup Kitchen, Habitat for Humanity, and more. In fact, it was a group from First Baptist Church that initiated the Habitat for Humanity of Greater Bangor.

First Baptist Church regularly sends representatives to a variety of denominational events, area meetings, and training events sponsored by our region. Many of our youth attend summer and/or winter camps at the China Lake Baptist Camp.
